The difference between Ocus20 and Ocus40 is in the image resolution: Ocus20 provides an image resolution of 0.50μm/pixel (comparable to 20X magnification), while Ocus40 provides an image resolution of 0.25μm/pixel (comparable to 40X magnification). The difference in the image resolution affects other features of the scanners, such as scanning speed and depth of field.

Ocus40 has a higher resolution, which makes it more versatile for a variety of use cases in basic histology and cytology at the cost of scanning speed. Ocus20, on the other hand, is suitable for use cases such as intraoperative frozen sections where the 20X magnification is enough and the scanning speed is important.

Compact size, easy installation, price (no ongoing fees), ease of use, high image quality.

We have customers using tape coverslip successfully. However, there are multiple things that can affect the image quality (for example, tissue thickness and coverslip quality). Thus, users should always make sure the chosen sample preparation method and equipment are suitable.

Yes. You can use Ocus remotely either via a VPN or a similar solution. Alternatively, the IT department can open the firewall port TCP 471 for the scanner to connect to Grundium's routing service. The port needs to be open only for outbound connections.

The scanner comes with its own viewer. Once you export the image, you can use any viewer supporting our export formats, SVS and TIFF, the most common image formats in digital pathology.

You can use Ocus scanners for most use cases, where you can use a 40X or 20X objective in a light microscope. The Ocus was not designed for hematology.

Access to the scanner and its viewer software can be given to multiple users. There are no additional user fees. The viewer supports viewing images that are stored in the scanner. For exported images, you need to use a third-party viewer. Currently, we do not offer a viewer for images that are not stored in the scanner. Currently, we support eight simultaneous users, of which one at a time can operate the scanner.

With Ocus40, you can store at least 250–300 2x2cm scans.
With Ocus20, the amount is 500–600.

It always depends on the size of the area scanned.
With Ocus40, the range is 0.3–1.5GB.
Ocus20's files are approximately half the size of Ocus40.

Yes. The Ocus scanners handle everything that can be looked at with a brightfield microscope with the corresponding (20X or 40X) magnification.

Currently, no AI solutions are integrated into the scanner by default. However, the WSIs scanned by Ocus scanners could be used as training or validation material for the third-party AI algorithm; after showing the algorithm compatibility with the 3rd party algorithm, the analysis is possible to conduct.

There are no mandatory yearly licenses or maintenance fees, and no regular calibration is needed. You can purchase additional years of warranty and software updates according to the quotation. No annual license fee. There is no limit to the number of registered users under the fair use policy. Concurrent users up to 8. Only one user can control the scanner at once.

The Ocus has a very solid aluminum body and is generally very robust. However, it's a high-precision instrument, so handle it with care. The Ocus does not withstand being dropped. Impact protection IK06 (Impact resistance rating). Always use a travel pin when carrying.

Place the scanner on a flat, stable surface and make sure there are at least 10 centimeters (4 inches) of free space around it.

Yes, during the warranty period.

Ocus® is very easy to use, and most people learn it in 15 minutes, even on their own. Grundium's YouTube channel provides videos to support users. In addition, customers can purchase onboarding/training online sessions.

One unit: 58x36x52 cm, 10 kg
Five units: 120x100x69 cm 70 kg (delivered on a pallet)

Yes, you can find scientific articles from Grundium scanners by using some research article databases such as PubMed or Google Scholar. We have also gathered some of those on our site, see Scientific Articles.

The scanner viewer creates an overview image, which also includes the label. The label image is also saved separately as part of the metadata.

Security

In Europe, the Ocus® devices are IVDR Class A. In the USA, research use only (RUO).

Grundium is ISO13485 certified. We are currently working on ISO27001 Security certification, and we expect to have it by the end of 2024.

The data is stored in the scanner. Ocus is equipped with 500GB of SSD storage. No data is transferred to Grundium's servers or anywhere else.

The data is stored in the scanner and encrypted at rest. When accessed remotely from an external network, the Ocus® uses the same security protocols used in online banking. All traffic is encrypted in transit with https. Files are not stored on the user's computer/tablet unless the user deliberately exports the file. Images are never stored in the cloud unless exported manually to a cloud destination by the user.

Ocus does not back up itself. In case backups are needed, the user should export WSI to an external storage solution.

There is a Kensington lock in the back of the scanner to secure it to a location physically.

Yes, it can be physically locked with a USB lock.

All data in the scanner is encrypted. Data is not stored in the cloud nor on users' computers unless the user exports images.

No. Data is only stored in the scanner. Image data should be exported from the scanner and stored on a separate storage solution (local or cloud) to have a backup.
